Water productivity of forage sorghum in response to winter cover crops in semi-arid irrigated conditions

چکیده
Forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a suitable alternative for corn silage in water-limited environments due to its similar yield potential as but with less water input. Cover cropping could further improve forage and productivity, making it the best crop arid semi-arid regions. This two-year study evaluated effect of fallow cover crops on soil volumetric content (VWC), extraction, changes storage (∆S), seasonal evapotranspiration (ETseasonal), system (ETsystem), productivity (CWPseasonal), (CWPsystem) under no-till irrigated condition. Treatments included three winter mixtures: grasses + brassicas legumes (GBL), (GB), (GL), no-cover control (fallow), arranged randomized complete block design four replications. significantly reduced VWC at beginning up 30 days after planting (DAP). However, 60 DAP, was mostly among all treatments, 90 17–21% higher treatments than fallow. The ETseasonal 22–26% during growth, 12–13% greater growth. Total extraction harvest 8–89% treatments. Averaged across years, biomass 11% GBL mixture GB GL mixtures. 23%, 32%, 18% GBL, GB, mixtures, respectively, Compared fallow, mixtures improved CWP by 38–43%. Results indicated that systems be substantially leaving land

Impacts of gypsum and winter cover crops on soil physical properties and crop productivity when irrigated with saline water
Reuse of saline subsurface drainage water for irrigation has been identi®ed as a potential option for managing drainage volumes and sustaining crop productivity in California's San Joaquin Valley. Soil surface structural instability, crusting and poor stand establishment may, however, be constraints in drainage reuse systems. The objective of this ®eld study was to evaluate the effectiveness of...

Consideration of Water Productivity for Farm Water Management in Different Conditions of Water Availability for Dominant Summer Crops
ABSTRACT- Efficient use of irrigation water for summer crops should be considered seriously due to rare occurrence of precipitation in summer. This research was focused on the assessment of water use efficiency for dominant crops of summer cropping pattern in the study area (i.e., maize and rice) via considering water productivity (WP) with different water management scenarios at farm level at ...
متن کاملUse of sorghum allelopathic properties to control weeds in irrigated wheat in a semi arid region of Punjab
Conventional methods of weed control are weather dependent, costly and labour intensive. Indiscriminate use of chemicals for controlling weeds may pose environmental problems. Sorghum allelopathy is a new technique, which has been tested for controlling weeds of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as a substitute for chemical herbicides to reduce environmental pollution. Mature sorghum herbage contain...
متن کاملWeed Control with Cover Crops in Irrigated Potatoes
Field experiments at Oakes, ND, USA in 2010 and Carrington, ND, USA in 2011 were conducted to evaluate the potential for cover crops grown in the Northern Great Plains, USA in order to reduce weed emergence and density in irrigated potatoes. Treatments included five cover crop treatments and three cover crop termination treatments. Termination of cover crops was done with glyphosate, disk-till,...
